Student Teaching Experience: Placement #1
For my first student teaching placement I was placed in a Grade 1 classroom at Kirkcaldy Heights School, a K-8 school in Brandon, Manitoba. I was placed with my cooperating teacher, Mrs. Mary Wardle, for a five (5) week period between mid-October and mid-November.
The objectives of the placement were to:
During the placement I integrated myself into the classroom, teaching a variety of subjects, from Mathematics to Social Studies to English Language Art. I taught a variety of lessons, some at the direction of the classroom teacher and some at my own discretion and planning. This experience taught me so much, what worked, what did not work, and generally, that teaching and learning is an evolving process and that flexibility and self-reflection is essential.
The objectives of the placement were to:
- be oriented to the school setting and the role of the Classroom Teacher
- be able to work on self-evaluation and give serious consideration to teaching as a career choice
- be able to systematically observe teacher and pupil behaviours in the school
- be able to perform record keeping tasks
- be able to begin planning/teaching lessons based on provincial curriculum guides studied on-campus
- be able to work with students one-on-one and in small groups
- be able to work in a team to plan and present lessons
- be required to teach at least 2 lessons per week.

For my second student teaching placement I am placed in a Grade 1 classroom at Carman Elementary School, a K-6 school in Carman, Manitoba. I am placed with cooperating teacher Mrs. Bev Lotscher for a seven (7) week period from the beginning of March to the beginning of May.

- use effective communication skills
- plan, prepare, present, and evaluate individual lesson plans
- plan activities using direct instruction, guided learning, and problem solving
- use the provincial curriculum guides for the courses you are teaching
- recognize the nature of individual differences and take them into consideration when teaching
- correct student assignments and conduct follow-up activities
- develop teaching skills and techniques
- create learning materials
- use classroom routines
- connect theory &/or coursework at B.U. with practice in the field
- plan and teach one unit and be prepared to teach at least one lesson a day, 2 per day by the end of the placement
